What we believe - what is a Christian?
People have different answers to the question “what is a Christian”? Media stereotypes create confusion that can be perplexing. It is more than living a decent life and having a vague belief in God. At the heart of the Christian faith is the possibility of coming alive to God’s love and finding a living relationship with Him. There’s a sense of coming home as we begin to see how Jesus has revealed our most complete picture of God.
We all have a crack inside of us, caused by our tendency to self-centredness. When we prefer to push God to the margins and manage our own lives, God can seem distant, because there’s a broken relationship. Through the death and resurrection of his Son Jesus Christ, God has provided a way out of our isolation. We may have looked for contentment and fulfilment in all sorts of places, but the Bible tells us that these things will always seem elusive until we walk through a gateway marked “forgiveness”.
A Christian is someone who sees the problem and recognises that the relationship with God needs repairing. We reach the point of asking for help and recognising that God himself has paid the price to deal with the damaging consequences of our sin.
Changing the direction of your life opens the door to discovering God’s very presence and power. It's tremendously exciting to discover that you can encounter Jesus for yourself and experience God's Fatherly love through the presence of the Holy Spirit. A Christian is someone who journeys through life with God knowing his eternal friendship that lasts even beyond death.
As we set out on the adventure of following Jesus’ example, we gain new values and priorities. It's thrilling to discover our true identity, to know how much God values us and to realise that we can be of use to Him in changing his world.
